Based on your battlefield performance and growing reputation, you can unlock access to additional corps, divisions, and brigades. Shield your soldiers from unnecessary casualties, and they will steadily improve their combat skills, evolving from inexperienced green recruits into hardened, seasoned veterans. However, if you suffer excessive losses, you may find yourself without sufficient reinforcements to achieve future victories. Your reputation will decline, the morale of your remaining troops will collapse, and ultimately you will be forced into an early retirement.

An innovative command system: you decide the level of control you wish to exercise on your Mac. You can micromanage each individual soldier or assign entire units a shared objective with the press of a single button and then observe its execution unfold. Division commanders are capable of making independent decisions and will assist you in managing even the largest and most complex army formations. Define a defensive line on the map, and the assigned brigades will hold it with courage and determination. Alternatively, initiate a sweeping long-range flanking maneuver by simply drawing an arrow, sending your entire army surging toward the enemy's exposed flank or vulnerable rear positions. Your generals will do their utmost to carry out your orders faithfully, though as the old military axiom warns, "no plan survives contact with the enemy."

Officer development: Historical squad leaders in Ultimate General: Civil War develop and sharpen their fighting skills alongside the player throughout the campaign. Officer ranks rise based on how well their troops perform in combat. But this is war, and officers face the constant risk of being wounded or killed in action. Achieving higher ranks unlocks new capabilities and enables officers to command larger formations of troops without any loss of effectiveness or tactical control. Victories on the battlefield also open up new strategic opportunities for you as the commanding general: you progressively develop valuable skills such as battlefield reconnaissance, logistical planning, and political influence.

Historically accurate weapons: the ultimate general experience on Mac features a vast and diverse array of Civil War-era weaponry—ranging from widely mass-produced Enfield rifled muskets to exceptionally rare and prized Whitworth sharpshooter rifles. Historical availability and production timelines are carefully taken into account. Certain weapons cannot simply be purchased; they can only be seized from enemy forces on the battlefield or captured during daring raids on enemy supply depots and armories.

Fine-grained control of your troops: you can dispatch riflemen to scout the heights and ridgelines ahead of your main force. Or, when the tactical situation demands it, combine several brigades together into a unified division for concentrated striking power. Cavalry units can dismount to reduce their visibility and profile against the enemy, then quickly mount up again for rapid flank attacks and devastating raids on enemy supply depots. Supply management is absolutely crucial. You must carefully plan and vigorously protect your supply lines, otherwise your battle effort could come to a premature and disastrous end.

Advanced artificial intelligence: on your Mac you will face a formidable and cunning enemy. The AI will attempt to outflank your positions, aggressively attack weak points and undefended high ground, systematically cut off your supply routes, and ruthlessly destroy unguarded artillery batteries. The AI will skillfully exploit terrain features and available cover, and will make prudent retreats when confronted with clearly superior forces rather than fighting to pointless destruction.

The terrain is also critically important: trenches, defensive lines, fences, houses, open fields—all of the battlefield's environmental features can help you achieve victory if you understand how to exploit them effectively. Hills and elevated positions will allow you to spot approaching enemy soldiers earlier and at greater distances. Rivers and bridges can serve as powerful natural obstacles and greatly aid in establishing strong defensive positions. Dense forests will help you conceal your troop movements and execute surprise flanking maneuvers against the enemy.
